HOME & HORIZONTHE DEEP NORTH

An Open Call

Northern Hands for a Northern World

To the culture markets, museums, musicians, sculptors, smiths and keepers of craft across the Nordic and Scandinavian world: come inspire the world, objects and characters of a game sung into being in honour of the traditions you keep.

Who We Are Calling

The Tradition Bearers

Home & Horizon: The Deep North is built on a simple conviction: a fantasy North worth making must be inspired by the real one — its materials, its music, its hands. We are looking for people and institutions who carry that reality forward.

Music & sound

  • Musicians and singers — kantele, jouhikko, tagelharpa, frame drum, joik and runo-song traditions
  • Instrument makers and luthiers keeping old builds alive
  • Field recordists of lake, forest, bog and storm
  • Composers curious about scoring a living game world

Craft & form

  • Sculptors, woodcarvers and bone-workers
  • Blacksmiths — especially bloomery and bog-iron traditions
  • Textile, wool, dye and leather artisans; weavers of band and braid
  • Boat-builders, tar-burners and builders of kota, laavu and stave tradition

Knowledge & collections

  • Museums, archives and open collection curators
  • Culture markets, craft fairs and heritage festivals
  • Archaeologists and Iron Age reenactors
  • Folklorists, storytellers and runo-singers of the Kalevala metre

Image & world

  • Painters and illustrators of the northern landscape
  • Photographers of lake-mist, taiga, fell and fjord
  • Concept artists drawn to grounded, painterly worldbuilding
  • Anyone whose work makes the North feel true

This Is Not a History Project

“Grounded in the Iron Age — not bound by it. We call it mythical realism.”

The world of Home & Horizon begins in the archaeological record: how a kota stands, how iron is sung from bog and bloom, how a kantele is held, how tar burns and birch bends. On top of that grounded form we lay a painterly surface, and in the light — fog, halo, the long dusk — we let the myth breathe. One fantastical detail per scene; everything else true. No horned helmets. No Hollywood Vikings.

Your craft would not be copied into a museum piece. It would inspire — a motif on a sheath, a rhythm in a crafting song, the weight of a hall, the voice of a shoreline. The game translates the real North into myth, and the translation is only as good as its sources.

The Masters We Bow To

The North Has Always Painted Its Myths

Our compass points: the painters who proved that this landscape and its folklore belong together on canvas. These works are public domain — we show them as our artistic lineage, and as the standard we aim at.

How It Works

From a Conversation to a Credit

1Talk

It starts with a conversation, not a contract. Show us your work, your collection, your tradition — tell us what the North means in your hands. We will show you the world as it stands.

2Inspire

Share reference, recordings, motifs, techniques — or create something new for the world. Inspiration can be as light as a photograph of a knot, or as deep as a recorded runo-song that becomes a crafting rite.

3Be named

Every contributor is credited in the game and on this site. Deeper collaborations — commissions, licensed recordings, curated collections — are shaped and agreed together, in writing, before any work begins.

“There have never been enough games rooted in the Finnish Iron Age and the Kalevala's mythic identity. Help us make the one that finally does it justice.”
